On Thursday, May 21, British Ambassador to South Korea Simon Smith visited NARS. The purpose of this visit was to share information on Korea’s response to the COVID-19 and to discuss the opening of the 21st National Assembly.
After thanking Amb. Smith for visiting, Mr. Kim Ha-joong, Chief of NARS, added that “For the success of the 21st National Assembly, I hope today’s meeting will be an opportunity to share the experience of korea's response to COVID-19 outbreak and to listen to the experience of the UK—the cradle of parliamentary democracy.”
Amb. Smith expressed gratitude for the warm welcome and said, “We receive multiple inquires on how Korea is fighting the COVID-19, and I was wondering whether NARS has conducted any analysis on the COVID-19 response.”
With regards to his inquiry, Chief of NARS passed on the ‘NARS Comprehensive Report on How We Are Handling the Outbreak.’ Mr. Kim went on to explain that Korea has been successful in controlling the spread of the virus thanks to the high effectiveness and responsiveness of Korea’s health care system and the principles of openness, transparency and democratic procedures.
During the meeting there was discussion on climate change, especially with regard to the importance of adopting environmentally-friendly-economic policies for economic recovery in the post-coronavirus era. Regarding this issue Amb. Simon Smith asked for NARS’s cooperation in bringing the issue of climate change to the attention of the 21st National Assembly and the Chief of NARS promised his active support.
Anna Connolly, Secretary for Political Affairs, and Yeom Dongyi, Senior Political Officer, both from the British Embassy in Seoul, also joined the meeting. NARS expects that the visit will further enhance bilateral cooperation between the two institutions.
