NARS Holds Joint Symposium on ¡°Restoration of Judicial Trust¡±
 Under the auspices of the National Assembly's Future Innovation Forum (President Rep. Kim Hackyong), the National Assembly Research Service (NARS) held a joint symposium with the Judicial Policy Research Institute (JPRI, President Kang Hyun-joong) on Thursday, June 20 at 1:20 p.m. at the National Assembly Constitution Memorial Hall under the theme ¡°Restoration of Judicial Trust¡±.

Kang Hyun-joong, President of JPRI, delivered the opening speech and both Moon Hee-sang, Speaker of National Assembly, and Cho Jae-youn, Minister of the National Court Administration, provided congratulatory remarks. Kim Ha-joong, Chief of NARS, delivered a welcoming speech, with additional congratulatory remarks provided by Yeo Sang-Kyoo, Chairman of National Assembly's Legislation & Judiciary Committee.

In the first session of the symposium, Professor Kim Je-wan (Korea University School of Law) and Judge Cha Sung-an (Judicial Policy Research Institute) issued a report on the ¡°Examination and Overseas System,¡± Which was followed by discussion among Rep. Joo Ho-young, Rep. Park Ju-min, Kwon Seok-cheon (editorial writer of the Korea Joongang Daily), Lee Kwang-soo (lawyer), and Cho Seo-yeon (legislative researcher of NARS).

In the second session, Judge Mo Sung-joon (Judical Cooperation Officer of Korean Embassy in the Netherlands) gave a presentation on ¡°The Senior Judge System.¡± This was followed by discussion among Rep. Kim Jong-min, Senior Judge Kang Young-ho (former chief of Patent Court of Korea), Kim Hyun (lawyer and former president of the Korean Bar Association), Lee Yong-koo (Head of the Legal Department of the Ministry of Justice) and Kim Young-hoon (General Personnel Officer of the National Court Administration). Kim U-jin, Chief Researcher of the Judicial Policy Research Institute, presided over the session.

A comprehensive discussion¡ªpresided over by Kwon Oh-gon, President of the Korea Society of Law¡ªfollowed and included some heated debate and Q&A among the speakers of the first and second sessions.

Overall, the symposium looked at the current condition and related overseas system of Korea's tradition of ¡®privileges of former post¡¯, and reviewed the adoption of the senior judge system as a solution to the problem, creating a consensus on the need to restore judicial trust through the settlement of the former official courtesy issue. The symposium also afforded the occasion to discuss various measures, including the senior judge system.
