The National Assembly Research Service (NARS) hosted its 9th International Seminar for Parliamentary Research Services at seminar room #1 in the National Assembly Members' Office building on Thursday, November 8, 2018.

For nine consecutive years since 2010, the International Seminar for Parliamentary Research Services has brought together parliamentary research services from around the world to exchange knowledge and information, share insightful experiences supporting legislative activities, and discuss legislative and policy issues.

A total of 45 delegates from 21 different countries including the USA, UK, Germany, Thailand and Uganda joined the International Seminar. The seminar featured one general topic and four specialized topics in order to provide a wider platform for exchange of ideas and discussion among participants. Under the general topic "The Legislature's Response to Science and Technology Developments Causing a Paradigm Shift in Society and People's Lives," participants actively discussed individual parliamentary efforts and cooperative ways to resolve issues relevant to the specialized discussion topics: 'SNS and Fake News', 'The Advent of Artificial Intelligence: Jobs and Basic Income', 'Personal Information Privacy Concerns', and 'Strengthening Parliament's Impact Assessment of Science and Technology Advancement on Society and Economy'.

Sessions were moderated by Rahim Hakimov, Director of the Legislation and Parliamentary Research Institute under the Oily Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan; Kim Young-il, Director General of Political and Administration Research Office of NARS; and Lydia Harriss, Senior Adviser and Physical Sciences Lead of the Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology of the United Kingdom. Heads and directors of offices from each parliamentary research service shared various thoughts and ideas on legislative responses to the scientific and technological developments.

Through the lively discussions and active participation of all the participants, the seminar provided a platform for everyone to strengthen cordial relations, as they shared their experiences and ways to further elevate parliamentary research services and broadened their networks.
