On Wednesday, December 5, NARS (Chief: Lee Nae-young) and Congressmen's Offices (Hong Eui-rak, Democratic Party of Korea; Kim Sam-hwa, Bareun Mirae Party) co-hosted a seminar on 'The Current Status of Energy and Regional Cooperation in Northeast Asia and Its Prospects' at the Main Conference Hall of the National Assembly Research Service.
The Republic of Korea lacks energy resources and thus relies on imports. Securing energy supplies is necessary in order to measure and stabilize pricing. This is all the more important now that the government's recent energy policy seeks to replace existing coal and atomic power generation with renewable energy sources.
In that regard, the seminar discussed the Northeast Asia super grid, which was established to secure electricity system of the region by supplying electricity to the Republic of Korea, China, and Japan—all of whom show high demand for electricity generated in the resource rich regions of China, Mongolia, and the Russian Federation.
Furthermore, participants discussed strategies that take into account the geopolitical factors impacting the securing of natural gas economically, considering the anticipated higher domestic demand due to the shifting energy matrix along with the expansion of natural gas supply internationally (in part due to the shale gas revolution).
The opening ceremony saw opening remarks provided by Lee Nae-young (NARS chief) and congratulatory remarks from Kim Sam-hwa (Congresswoman) and Hong Eui-rak (Congressman).
Moon Seung-il (Professor at Seoul National University) served as a moderator. Chang Gil-su (Professor at Korea University) gave a presentation on the topic "Current Status and Proceeding Plan of the Northeast Super Grid."
Following the presentations, Lee Seong-gyu (Researcher at Korea Energy and Economics Institute), Gang Geun-su (Director General at Korea Electric Power Corporation), Yoo Hee-deok (Deputy Director General at Electricity Times), and Kim Yei-kyoung (Legislative Researcher at NARS) actively participated in discussions.
