Dr. Lee Nae Young (Chief of NARS) paid an official visit to the Legislation and Parliamentary Research Institute (LPRI) of Uzbekistan and the Islamic Parliament of Iran Research Center (IPIRC) of Iran from April 8 - 17.

In January, the Institute for Monitoring of Current Legislation under the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan expanded by opening a new research institute under the Oily Majlis (Parliament) as the LPRI. Dr. Lee visited Uzbekistan to discuss follow-up measures on the MOU signed by NARS and the LPRI in February 22.

During the meeting with Rahim Hakimov (Director of LPRI), Dr. Lee was briefed on detailed plans on the implementation of the MOU and opening of a center on Korean legislative studies. Dr. Lee expressed NARS¡¯s full support and cooperation in working with the LPRI. Dr. Lee also shared his plans on hosting the 9th International Seminar on Parliamentary Research Services and that it will provide an opportunity to learn more about the different legislative systems around the world.

Following the meeting a seminar was hosted by the Legislative Chamber of Uzbekistan. Kim Ju-kyoung (Legislative researcher of Health Care, Welfare, Family and Gender Equality team) gave a presentation on ¡®National Health Insurance System in the Republic of Korea: Sharing Experiences and Lessons.¡¯ Around 60 people participated in the seminar including Dr. Hakimov and nine members of the Legislative Chamber, who showed great interest in Korea¡¯s national health insurance system.

After visiting Uzbekistan, the NARS delegation travelled to Iran and met with Kazem Jalali (Head of IPIRC). After listening to a briefing on the organization and the role of the institution, Dr. Jalali and Dr. Lee discussed extending the MOU which was signed in 2014 between NARS and IPIRC. They both agreed to exchange legislative information, carry out visiting programs for respective personnel, and strengthen capacity through meetings and seminars on matters of common and mutual interests.

Through this visit to Iran and Uzbekistan, NARS expects to expand and balance its network—which had been focused primarily on the US, Europe and Japan—and to strengthen its capability to collect and analyze overseas legislative information.
