NARS NEWS: NARS Co-hosts Conference Commemorating 70th Anniversary of the Opening of the National Assembly
On Wednesday, April 18, NARS and a National Assembly Caucus ¡®Beyond Unification towards Eurasia¡¯ (co-representatives: Noh Woong-rae and Hong Moon-pyo) co-hosted a seminar on ¡°Changing Political Situation of the Korean Peninsula and Korea-US Security and Trade Issues¡± at Seminar Room #1 of the Members¡¯ Office Building.

The seminar featured a series of presentations by the following: Professor Emeritus Yoon Young-kwan (Seoul National University), Prof. Choi Byung-il (Ewha Women¡¯s University), and Prof. Heo Yoon (Sogang University). The presentations were followed by discussion among panelists Kim Han-jung (Democratic Party of Korea), Baek Seung-joo (Liberty Korea Party), Lee Sang-hyun (Head of the Research Planning Division at the Sejong Institute), Prof. Cheong Inkyo (Inha University), Dr. Chung Chul (Korea Institute for International Economic Policy), and Dr. Lee Jin-Myon (Korea Institute for Industrial Economics and Trade).

In his presentation, Yoon Young-kwan explained the cause of the recent change on the Korean Peninsula—i.e., from being on the verge of an armed conflict to dialogue among adversaries—and presented the following tasks of the ROK-US cooperation according to different scenarios. He also stressed the need of establishing a long-term national goal for the future of the Korean Peninsula.

Choi Byung-il presented his views on the US Donald Trump administration¡¯s trade policy and the current state of the Korean trade, remarking on key issues between Korea and the US, and suggested that they prepare a new job-friendly trading paradigm and trade promotion system for the ¡°New Normal¡± with diverse linkage strategies.

Heo Yoon examined the background of the trade policy of the Trump administration and its relevant actions, and then elaborated on the issues and prospects, reviewing the main contents and results of the renegotiated Korea-US FTA.

This seminar was held to review the issues on security and trade for the development of Korea-US relations and to draw up future tasks. NARS expects that this meeting will contribute to the peace settlement of the Korean Peninsula and the development of Korea, suggesting the future challenges and the countermeasure strategies for the development of Korea-US relations in this time of uncertainty and flux.
