NARS NEWS: NARS Co-hosts Seminar on ¡®Changing Political Situation of the Korean Peninsula and Korea-US Security and Trade Issues¡¯
 On Friday, May 25, NARS and the Korean Political Science Association (KPSA) co-hosted a conference commemorating the 70th anniversary of the opening of the National Assembly under the theme ¡®Reflect on the 70 Years of the National Assembly and Review the Current Status of Representative Democracy.¡¯

The conference took a look back at various aspects of the 70 years of the National Assembly of Korea in order to seek ways to fulfill the National Assembly¡¯s role as the representative body of the citizens and to further develop representative democracy.

During the opening ceremony Kim Ui-yeong, President of the KPSA, delivered the opening remarks. This was followed by congratulatory remarks by the National Assembly Speaker Chung Sye-kyun and welcoming remarks by the Chief of NARS, Dr. Lee Nae Young.

Lim Seong-ho (professor at Kyung Hee University) moderated the first session under the title ¡®Reflect and Review 70 years of the National Assembly.¡¯ The session included three presentations: Jang Seung-jin (professor at Kookmin University) presented on ¡®Changes and Characteristics of the National Assembly—Presidential Relationship,¡¯ while Kim Yoon-chul (professor at Kyung Hee University) presented his thoughts on ¡®Changes and Development of the Party Politics in the National Assembly¡¯ and Jeon Jin-young (legislative researcher at NARS) presented on ¡®Changes and Continuity in Authority and Partisan Role of the National Assembly Speakers.¡¯ Presentations were followed by a lively discussion among Ka Sang-joon (professor at Dankook University), Koo Bon Sang (professor at Yonsei University), and Seo Jungkun (professor at Kyung Hee University).

The second session focused on ¡®Current Status and Future Development of Representative Democracy.¡¯ Jin Youngjae (professor at Yonsei University) served as a moderator for this three-presentation session: Kim Joon-suk (professor at Dongguk University) shared his view on ¡®Effects on Voting: Members of Parliament Preferences, Interest Group, Local Constituency and Party Affiliation (Analyzing Raising Taxes on Tobacco Voting in Plenary Session)¡¯; Chang Woo-young (professor at Daegu Catholic University) presented on ¡®Online Citizen Participation and Innovation of Representative Democracy¡¯; and Chang Hye-young (professor at Chung-Ang University) talked about ¡®Deliberative Democracy and Representative Democracy: Win-win or Win-lose?¡¯ Park Kyung-mee (professor at Chonbuk University), Jeong Hoe-ok (professor at Myongji University), and Choi Jeong-in (legislative researcher at NARS) actively participated as discussants for the session.
