NARS Co-hosts Policy Forum on ¡®Demand-oriented Childcare and Gender Neutral Caring in the Hyper-low Birth Rate Era¡¯
On Wednesday, May 9, NARS (Chief Lee Nae Young), Kwon Mi-hyuk (Member¡¯s Office, Democratic Party of Korea), Shin Bora (Member¡¯s Office, Liberty Korea Party), Choi Doja (Member¡¯s Office, Bareunmirae Party), and the Korea Institute of Child Care and Education (KICCE) (led by President Baek Sun-Hee) co-hosted a policy forum for ¡°Demand-oriented Childcare and Gender Neutral Caring in the Hyper-low Birth Rate Era¡± at the main conference hall of the National Assembly Research Service.

Despite the expansion and strengthening of low fertility policies that have been underway for 13 years since 2006, many ¡®blind spots¡¯ of childcare remain, as does a lack of legal system on gender equality in childcare. This forum was organized to find measures to improve these problems in Korea.

During the opening ceremony, NARS chief Lee Nae Young delivered the opening remarks and KICCE president Baek Sun-Hee the welcoming address. Welcoming remarks were provided by Kwon Mi-hyuk (Member of Democratic Party of Korea), Shin Bora (Member of Liberty Korea Party), and Choi Doja (Member of the Bareunmirae Party).

In the first session, Dr. Lee Jaehee (Associate Research Fellow at KICCE) and Dr. Kim Song Yi (Research Fellow at Seoul Foundation of Women & Family) gave presentations on ¡®Demands for Childcare Support after Children¡¯s Entrance into Elementary Schools and the Policy Tasks¡¯ and ¡®Raise the Effectiveness of the Tailored Childcare and Tasks for the Future¡¯, respectively. As discussants, Prof. Choi Young (Chung-Ang University), Prof. Jeong Young-mo (Hanyang University), and Dr. Park Sun-Kwon (Legislative Researcher at NARS) suggested diverse policy measures to help resolve the current challenges.

During the second session, Dr. Lee Yun-Jin (Research Fellow at KICCE) presented her study on ¡®Current Status of the Fathers¡¯ Childcare Support and Measures to Enhance Fathers¡¯ Capacity for Childcare¡¯ and Dr. Hong Seung Ah (Research Fellow at Korean Women¡¯s Development Institute) gave a presentation on ¡®The Effect of the Father¡¯s Parental Leave and Ways to Its Encouragement¡¯. On the following discussions, Kim Hyejun (Chief of Involved Fathers in Korea), Prof. Choi Sook Hee (Hanyang Cyber University), and Dr. Heo MinSook (Legislative Researcher at NARS) actively shared their views on promoting fathers¡¯ participation in childcare.
