On Thursday, November 9, the National Assembly Research Service (NARS) hosted its 8th International Seminar for Parliamentary Research Services at seminar room #1 in the Members¡¯ Office building.
For eight consecutive years, the International Seminar for Parliamentary Research Services has brought together parliamentary research services from around the world to exchange knowledge and information, share insightful experiences supporting legislative activities, and discuss legislative and policy issues. The seminar first began in 2010.
This year more than 30 delegates from 16 different countries including the USA, Canada, India and Uganda joined the international seminar. This year¡¯s seminar featured a two-topic focus—one general and one specific—in order to provide a wider platform for exchange of ideas and discussion.
The general topic on ¡®Enhancing the Dialogue between Parliaments and Citizens¡¯ had delegates focus on sharing their efforts and challenges in improving communication with citizens. Through this discussion participants expected to find ways to expand their function as national fora for public discourse.
The specialized topic, ¡®Addressing Transnational Challenges: Promoting Inter-parliamentary Cooperation¡¯, saw delegates discuss ways to tackle cross-border issues which require national response, particularly through parliamentary partnership.
The first three sessions of the seminar addressed the general topic while the last session dealt with the specialized topic. Through the lively discussions and active participation by all the participants, the seminar provided a platform for everyone to share their experiences and ways to further elevate parliamentary research services and to further broaden their networks.
