Appreciation plaques and commendations were presented to several staff members to honor their contribution. A congratulatory speech was given by the Speaker of the National Assembly. NARS staffs and participants also enjoyed snacks and beverages after the ceremony.
Dr. Lee Nae Young said in his speech that ¡°NARS has doubled in size and the research requests by MPs has increased by 25-fold. This all shows how NARS has progressed both quantitatively and qualitatively.¡± He went on to add, ¡°Despite all the accomplishments, we will continue to self-develop to strengthen our expertise and legislative support capabilities. NARS will also make a new leap forward in the next decade through mid-and-long term strategies.¡±
NARS was launched on November 6, 2007 as an independent research agency to strengthen the National Assembly¡¯s legislative capacity and expertise. Over the last decade, NARS has completed 52,000 research requests by the MPs and published 2,100 reports. Through its active support of assembly members' legislative and policy developments, NARS has lived up to its name as the true think tank of the National Assembly. Recently as it marked the 10th anniversary, NARS has doubled its efforts by forming a taskforce dedicated to discerning NARS¡¯s future directions as it strives to become one of the best think tanks in Korea.

This rapid increase in research request was driven by a couple of factors: the enhanced reputation home and abroad and its credibility of the National Assembly Research Service as a comprehensive policy research service, and active legislative and policy movements by the MPs and committees. In fact, as of July 27th there have been 7,333 legislative bills proposed by current lawmakers of the 20th National Assembly. It has already reached 47.5% of the total bills (15,444) proposed by legislators of the 19th National Assembly.
NARS will continue to work hard to provide quality research services necessary for MPs' legislative and policy activities and spare no efforts in realizing a policy-driven National Assembly.
