After the Sewol ferry disaster, NARS and the National Assembly Secretariat Legislative Counseling Office jointly launched a Task Force for the Sewol Ferry Disaster Response Measures to support the National Assembly members' parliamentary activities in addressing the disaster. The task force was created to identify causes of large-scale disasters (such as the recent Sewol ferry accident), search for ways to prevent similar incidents from happening, and come up with field-specific preventative measures.

From NARS, a total of six researchers Participated: Counsel of Political Administration Research, legislative researchers from the Security and Public Administration team and Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs team. The Security and Public Administration team conducted research on the Central Disaster and Safety Countermeasures Headquarters' control tower for disaster response, support, and services for disaster victims and their families. The Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs team studied problems of the current marine navigation system, vessel traffic services (VTS), and safety system for coastal shipping.

After holding ten meetings the task force published an interim report titled "The Sewol Ferry Disaster: How to Improve Disaster Management." The final report will be published by the end of August, with overseas cases and more in-depth analysis added.

NARS expects this report to help members prepare for parliamentary investigation that will attempt to ascertain the truth about the causes of the Sewol ferry disaster and prescribe preventive measures to avoid any recurrence of such a disaster.
