On Friday, May 26, 2017 the National Assembly Research Service (NARS) co-hosted a seminar on 'Leading a New Administration: The Role of the President' with The Korean Association for Policy Studies (KAPS) and East Asia Institute at the main conference hall.

On May 9, Moon Jae-in was sworn in as South Korea's 19th president in a by-election. As a snap election was held, President Moon had to take office immediately without the usual two-month transition period.

Given this situation, the seminar was held to discuss feasible and thought out measures in setting the Moon administration's new directions and possible reforms.

Yongmo Lee, President of The Korean Association for Policy Studies kicked off the seminar with his opening speech, followed by congratulatory speech by Chung Syekyun, Speaker of the National Assembly, and a welcoming speech by Dr. Lee Nae Young, Chief of NARS. In the first session Dr. Lee Sook Jong, President of the East Asia Institute, presented his keynote speech on 'Role of the President for a Successful New Government'.

During the second session there were four papers presented. Park Hyungjun (professor at Sungkyunkwan University) talked on 'Future Directions for the Blue House', Lah Tae Joon (professor at Yonsei University) discussed 'Ways to Resolve Public Dispute', Han Seung Jun (professor at Seoul Women's University) presented a paper on 'Setting Directions for Public Institution Reform', and Kim Tae Young (professor at Kyunghee University) examined 'Local Autonomy and Decentralization'.

The third session was followed by discussion from Kwon Gihyeon (professor at Sungkyunkwan University), Kim Junki (professor at Seoul National University), and Park Sujung (Secretary General of the Citizens' Coalition for Better Government). Song Pyung In, (Editorial Writer for Dong-A Ilbo), Dr. Lee Nae Young, and Lee Yongmo also joined the group for suggesting desirable governance and policy reform.
