On Wednesday, March 29, the National Assembly Research Service (NARS) held a seminar on 'Setting Korea's Foreign Policy and Parliamentary Policy in an Age of Uncertainty' at the main conference hall.
This seminar comes at a time when Northeast Asia is facing a turbulent period. The meeting provided a forum for examining the changing order in the region and Korea's response and suggesting directions for foreign and parliamentary policy.
National Assembly Speaker Chung Syekyun said in his keynote speech "Trump's 'America first' foreign policy, China's retaliation against Korea for deploying Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) system, conflict with Japan regarding the comfort woman memorial statue, North Korea's provocations in breach of international norms, all these are contributing factors for a complex order in Northeast Asia." He went on to say that Korea "will further strengthen parliamentary cooperation among countries participating in the Six Party Talks to promote peace in this region and especially to address North Korea's nuclear issue."
The Chief of NARS served as a moderator and former Foreign Minister Yoon Young-kwan (professor at Seoul National University) gave a presentation entitled 'Setting Korea's Foreign Policy and Parliamentary Policy in an Age of Uncertainty'. During general discussion Kim Kyung Hyup (Democratic Party of Korea), Member of the National Assembly Foreign Affairs & Unification Committee, Yoon Youngseok (Member of Liberty Korea Party), Lee Taekyu (Member of People's Party), Cheong Yangseog (Member of Bareun Party) and Yun Duk Min (Chancellor of the Korea National Diplomatic Academy) shared their thoughts and views.
