On June 8, the National Assembly Research Service reached a milestone with the publication of its 1,000th Distribution Memoranda. The celebration and ceremony was held at the NARS main conference hall.
The participation of several distinguished people enhanced the significance of the occasion: Speaker Chung Ui-hwa, the governing Saenuri Party floor leader Yoo Seong-min, Chief of the NARS Lim Seong-ho, Chief Librarian Lee Eun-chul, Chief of the National Assembly Budget Office Kim Jun-ki, and NARS's Advisory Committee Chairman Ahn Byeong-ok.
The 'Distribution Memoranda' is a short report (4 pages long) on current legislative and policy issues and includes recommendations for policy directions and solutions. NARS supports Members' parliamentary activities through the publishing of the report. Since its inaugural edition ("Debate on North Korea's Missile Launch and its Implications")on March 11, 2009,the Distribution Memoranda has been covering a wide gamut of social issues, providing suggestions for legislation. On June 2, 2015 NARS marked the memoranda's 1,000th edition.
In his congratulatory speech, Speaker Chung Ui-hwa stressed that "this event should not be just about celebrating but should serve as an opportunity to improve the quality of the report." He also added that "I encourage NARS to explore more ways to make Distribution Memoranda widely spread and read by the public-releasing the report via SNS (Social Networking Service) could be a good way to start."
Saenuri Party floor leader Yoo Seong-min encouraged NARS staff and said, "When NARS Distribution Memoranda delves into important and timely issues and analyzes different opinions based on non-partisanship, it will become one of the most influential reports in Korea."
Dr. Lim praised his staff's efforts in his congratulatory speech, saying "Distribution Memoranda is one of NARS's signature products. And thanks to all your commitment NARS was able to publish more than 1,000 Distribution Memoranda report in a relatively short period of time."
