NARS Holds 10th - 12th NARS Perspectives and Discussion
From October to December 2021, the National Assembly Research Service (NARS) held its monthly forum ‘NARS Perspectives and Discussion’.

This forum invites authorities in various fields for the purpose of facilitating expert discussion to promptly identify and approach critical issues that could affect state affairs and the country’s future. After each issue-focused presentation, forum-style discussions are held with experts at NARS in order to derive germane legislative and policy implications.

Each forum is moderated by the Chief of the National Assembly Research Service and includes presentation from a top expert plus designated discussion from a relevant expert and a NARS legislative research officer.

The tenth forum was held on Friday, October 29 under the theme “Human Rights Discussion Trends and Human Rights Issues in Korea.” Shin Heisoo (Vice Chairperson of UN Committee on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, CESCR) was invited as a speaker to share her insights on human rights issues and Lee Jae-yung (Legislative Research Officer of NARS Legislation and Judiciary Team) took part as designated discussion panelist. The forum touched upon the major issues and developing concept of human rights, and examined the current status of Korea’s human rights situation along with ways to help Korea to become a leader of human rights.

The eleventh forum was held on Wednesday, November 24 on “An Era of Big Tech: Ways to Establish Economic Order for Fairness and Coexistence.” Chung Hoyul (Distinguished Professor at Konkuk Law School, and 15th Chairperson of the Fair Trade Commission) was invited to speak on issues of the ‘Big Tech’ era and Kang Ji-won (Legislative Research Officer of NARS Finance and Fair Trade Team) took part as designated discussant. Causes of deepening polarization between the large enterprises and SMEs in the era of Big Tech and the reality of unfair economy in Korea were diagnosed. Based on this diagnosis, countermeasures for the coexistence of SMEs and small companies, and consumer protection were sought from the perspective of fairness.

The twelfth forum was held on Wednesday, December 29, with Park Namgi (Former President of Gwangju National University of Education) speaking on “How to Overcome Educational Crisis and Develop Future Talents” and Lee Deok-nan (Legislative Research Officer of NARS Education and Culture Team) joining the discussion.

‘NARS Perspectives and Discussion’ are aired on National Assembly Broadcasting (NATV). For more information, please visit our NARS SNS and YouTube channel.
