On Tuesday, December 10, NARS (Chief: Kim Ha-joong), the National Assembly¡¯s Foreign Affairs and Unification Committee (Chairman: Yoon Sanghyun, Member of the National Assembly) and the Korean Peninsula Peace and Prosperity Forum (President: Park Byungseok, Member of the National Assembly) co-hosted a seminar on the ¡°Prospects for U.S.-China Relations in 2020 and Their Implications for South Korea¡± at the NARS Main Conference Hall.

The aim of the seminar was to examine U.S.-China relations in 2019 and to predict the direction of U.S.-China strategic competition and trade disputes in 2020. In doing so, the experts could draw implications for South Korea and the National Assembly.

The first session of the seminar was moderated by Lee Hee-ok (Dean of the Graduate School of Strategic Studies, Sungkyunkwan University). Presentations were given by Lee Sang Hyun (Senior Research Fellow at the Sejong Institute) and Kim Yei Kyoung (Legislative Researcher at NARS) under the theme ¡°The Prospects for U.S.-China Strategic Competition in 2020.¡± Lee Sang Hyun spoke about the establishment of a new international order following US-China strategic competition and its implications for South Korea. Kim Yei-kyoung analyzed how US-China relations have developed into all-out competition in areas such as foreign affairs, security, and economics, and discussed the changes in the mutual perceptions of each population. Park Ihn-hwi (Professor at Ewha Womans University), Hang Jaeho (Professor at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies), Shin Beomchul (Senior Fellow at the Center for Security and Unification of the Asan Institute for Policy Studies), and Shin Jong-Ho (Research Fellow at Korea Institute for National Unification) participated in follow-up discussions.

During the second session, titled ¡°Prospects for U.S.-China Trade Disputes in 2020,¡± Professor Choi Byung-il (Ewha Womans University) and Yang Pyung Sup (Senior Research Fellow at the Korea Institute for International Economic Policy) gave presentations, while You Woongjo (Counsel of Politics and Administration Research) served as a moderator. Professor Choi Byung-il predicted more trade disputes between the U.S. and China and articulated the need for Korea to develop security, industry, and trade strategies as a response. Yang Pyung Sup provided the background on the recent US-China trade dispute and the current status of China's countermeasures. Yang later discussed the future prospects for trade disputes between the two countries. Following the presentations, Lee Seung-ju (Professor at Chung-Ang University), Ahn You-hwa (Sungkyunkwan University), Park Ji-hyung (Seoul National University), and Choi Pil-soo (Sejong University) participated in the discussions.

Throughout the seminar, under the theme ¡°Prospects for U.S.-China Relations in 2020 and Their Implications for South Korea,¡± participants exchanged diverse opinions on the current status of U.S.-China relations, and suggested strategies for Korean diplomacy.
